Icon Blue Volunteers at the Midnight Mission Downtown

Team Blue Helped Lunch Crews at Local Homeless Shelter during Team Honda’s Week of Service

On Wednesday, June 15, and Friday, June 17, members of the Icon Blue team headed over for a few hours to help serve lunch to the homeless and disadvantaged at the Midnight Mission. Located in Downtown Los Angeles, The Midnight Mission has been serving the community for over 100 years, providing resources to those in need.

From MidnightMission.org:
“Founded in 1914, The Midnight Mission offers paths to self-sufficiency to men, women and children who have lost direction. Our emergency services and 12-step recovery, family living, job training, education and workforce development programs offer a compassionate bridge to achieve and maintain healthy, productive lives.”

For those of us who participated at the lunch hour volunteering, it was an opportunity to move out of our comfort zone to help others in our community. It was a fairly small commitment to help serve lunch and do a brief clean-up. The results, however, were heartwarming. We were able to be a part of an excellent program that manages to routinely serve between 400-1000 people during each meal time.

We were impressed by how efficient and well-coordinated the Midnight Mission is at handling not only the people they serve, but also at getting the volunteers up-to-speed in a matter of minutes.

Within 10 minutes of parking, Icon Blue was in line ready to start serving lunch. For about forty-five minutes, we served lunch to over 400 people on Skid Row. It was a humbling experience, particularly because it challenged a lot of preconceived notions about what “homelessness” looks like. The people served by the Midnight Mission were varying degrees of disadvantaged. It put front and center how valuable institutions like the Midnight Mission are to the communities they serve and how much good can be done with just a small amount of time volunteering.

If your business is looking to get more involved in the community, we highly recommend looking into helping out at the Midnight Mission. You can learn more about them at the website here.
